Sleep Apnea and High Blood Pressure A Dangerous Pair There’s a wealth of research suggesting that sleep apnea and high blood pressure are a dangerous pair. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Treatment & Management

Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) experience obstructed or restricted breathing for periods of 10 seconds or longer during sleep. Doctors typically can diagnose OSA in two ways: via an overnight sleep study at a clinic or an at-home test. Left untreated, OSA may raise the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, heart arrhythmia or insulin resistance. The standard treatment for OSA is continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, which involves wearing a mask during sleep. The device conducts pressurized air through the nose, or through the nose and mouth, to the throat. That pressure keeps the throat from collapsing during sleep to

Untreated sleep apnea may lead to stroke

Untreated sleep breathing disorders and stroke It’s estimated that 8 out of 10 people with any form of sleep apnea remain undiagnosed (and, therefore, untreated). “Sleep apnea can be an after effect of stroke, but can also be the cause of a first time or recurrent stroke. The condition causes low oxygen levels and high blood pressure, both of which can increase the risk of a future stroke.” “During an apneic episode, the body asserts an amazing amount of effort to try to open the airway and get a breath in,” Dr. Lipford reported. Unfortunately, this effort frequently fails to supply the

Benefits of CPAP Device for sleep apnea

Benefits of CPAP Device for sleep apnea While a CPAP device may look complicated at first glance, it’s anything but. You simply wear the mask as you prepare to fall asleep. The device works to create continuous pressure in your throat to make it stay open as you sleep. This prevents sleep apnea events from occurring, which creates a more restful sleeping experience. A key step is making sure that your CPAP mask creates a tight seal over your mouth and nose. At Global Sleep Care Centre, we take the time with you in our center to allow you to try

Can You Lose Weight While You Sleep?

Late-night munchies can wreck havoc on your diet plans so the next time they strike, hit the sack instead. The more sleep you get, the less likely you are to succumb to delicious temptation, and the faster you’ll lose weight. More studies are showing a link between sleep deprivation and weight gain, says Meredith Barbour, MD, a family medicine physician at Duke Primary Care Brier Creek. “Lack of sleep triggers the release of hormones that stimulate hunger and appetite, especially for those high-calorie, carbohydrate-dense foods like cookies, chips and ice cream,” she says. Insomnia, Anxiety, and Depression

Chronic insomnia can increase a person’s chances for developing anxiety disorders and depression, according to a study conducted by Dag Neckelmann, MD, PhD, of the Department of Psychiatry at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen, Norway. The study, published in the July 1, 2007, issue of the journal SLEEP, was based on data collected from 25,130 adults from two general health surveys conducted over a 10-year period. Neckelmann found significant associations between the long-term course of chronic insomnia and the development of anxiety disorders and depression.

New Sleep Apnea Treatment Offers CPAP Alternative

People with obstructive sleep apnea who haven’t found relief may benefit from a new pacemaker-like device that keeps the airway open during sleep. When other options have failed, “this treatment has allowed us to achieve a whole new level of success,” said Matthew Ellison, MD, an otolaryngologist at Duke, the first center in North Carolina to implant the Inspire hypoglossal nerve stimulator system. Why a New Approach to Treating Sleep Apnea Is Needed The most common type of sleep apnea occurs when soft tissue in the back of the throat blocks the airway and results in frequent, nightly breathing interruptions. This
